The new Fort Collins Museum of Discovery (FCMoD) is an innovative blend of history, science, and culture content. Our open floor plan encourages unique flow-through topic adjacencies, so every teacher can plan a route specific to their students’ needs.
Thank you for your interest in scheduling a school visit to FCMoD! Whether kindergarteners, 4th graders, or high school students, FCMoD offers fun experiences for any age. To make a field trip reservation, you must have 15 students or more.
Field trip groups may schedule visits during regular business hours, Tuesday through Sunday, 10am to 5pm. On weekdays, schools may schedule their arrival as early as 9 am. We recommend scheduling at least 90 minutes for your visit.
The cost for field trips is $5 per students, with 1 free chaperone for 5 students. We require a 1:5 ratio for every school group. Extra adults over the 1:5 ratio are $5. Reservations must be made at least 2 weeks in advance. Discounted digital dome tickets at $3 per person are available with a field trip reservation. All individuals, whether chaperone or student, are charged $3 for the dome show because we are selling a theatre seat.
Contact the Museum’s Reservations Office at 970-416-2705 or email us at reservations@fcmod.org. Please allow 48 hours for a response.
We recommend scheduling at least 90 minutes for your visit.
Lunch space is available upon request.
Please include the following information in your reservation request:
Teachers may also reserve space for lunch during field trips. Depending on the size of the group, lunch space may only be available on a rotational basis.
Field trip confirmation will be emailed. This document will include information on bus loading and unloading; student entrance location; and other information relevant to making your students’ field trip rewarding.
In addition, the museum will provide special field trip planning passes to teachers. This pass allows teachers free one-time admission to the museum to plan for their field trip in advance of their visit.
Group Admission Rates
We are accepting advanced reservations for groups of 15 or more. Teachers may call the museum's reservation line at 970-416-2705 or email us at reservations@fcmod.org.
Groups of 15 or more individuals, regardless of age, with reservations at least two weeks in advance of their visit, will pay $5 per person. For group visits, the museum requires a 1:5 adult to student ratio; for school groups meeting this ratio, chaperones will be granted free admission. If a group does not meet the minimum adult to student ratio, the $5 admission fee will be charged to all adult chaperones. Digital dome theater tickets are just $3 per person with a group reservation.
Any children in the group that qualify for the Free & Reduced Lunch program will be granted admission to the museum at no charge. Please inform the museum of the number of your students who are on the Free & Reduced Lunch program at the time of your reservation, and provide documentation of the number of students on school letterhead the day of your visit.
FCMoD memberships held by students (either as individuals or family members) will not apply to discounts on admission during school field trips.
Student Programs
Student field trips are ongoing, and additional programs, such as science labs and history workshops, will be announced by the Education Department soon for the 2013-2014 school year.
Outreach Trunks
FCMoD has school activity trunks available for checkout. Trunks are available on a weekly basis, Monday through Friday, for a fee of $25. A school may check out a trunk for one week per class; for example, a 3-track school may rent a trunk for three consecutive weeks.
New to FCMoD: in addition to the weekly rental fee, we now offer delivery and pick up for outreach trunks! For an additional $10, we are able to deliver trunks to schools in the following zip codes: 80521, 80524, 80525, 80526, and 80528.
Please call the museum's reservation line at 970-416-2705 or email us at reservations@fcmod.org to check on the availability of our trunks, which include:

What about the Courtyard and Cabins?
The Heritage Courtyard is where the museum preserves four structures significant to Fort Collins history: the Janis, Stone and Franz-Smith cabins, and the Boxelder Schoolhouse. While many people wonder if the cabins and schoolhouse will be moved to the new facility, we have decided to maintain the cabins in the Heritage Courtyard due to concerns regarding structural integrity for these buildings.
We understand that a visit to the Courtyard is an integral element of the local history curriculum for many classes. More importantly, we have seen the positive impact on countless students created by an immersive experience in a cabin. Many gain a new appreciation for history during these field trips – which thrills us!
The Heritage Courtyard will open for school group access in the fall of 2013. Reservations are required, and may be made by calling the museum’s reservations line at 970-416-2705 or emailing us at reservations@fcmod.org. The museum will provide teacher and chaperone guides to the Courtyard; facilitated programs in the cabins will resume in the fall of 2013.
